I attended Vancouver Barcamp 2006 last weekend and it was a hit! One of the highlights was Photocamp hosted by the likes of Warwick Patterson, Kris Krug and Matt Trentlacoste (PHD student at UBC). It was a one hour session and had a lot of cool goodies for us to gander at. Matt was up first and showed us some online demos of prototypes of what he is working on at UBC. This included Fourier slice photography, Graph processing and the Read the rest of this entry »
Bon Cop Bad Cop is the gut-busting new offering to the growing area of mainstream Canadian Movies. Patrick Huard as Dave Bouchard, is the swearin’ beer drinkin’ French-Canadian cop who believes without a doubt that all english-speaking Canadians know naught about the Quebcois, is the perfect foil for Colm Feore as Martin Ward the straight-laced cop with “Ontario up his ass”. The two are brought together to solve a murder mystery when a corpse mysteriously appears on top of the “Welcome to Ontario/You Are Leaving” Quebec sign. Disparities in cultural and personality differences give way to terrific comic relief as each takes a jab at each others ignorances. I couldn’t help but wonder if an American audience would find humour here. The seriousness of the murder contrasts with the sharp-witted dry humour of the verbal exchanges between the cops. Of course, a Canadian movie wouldn’t be Canadian without hockey in it and I was bemused to see the killer Read the rest of this entry »
Future of the Digital Library

Currently I am part of a task group that is working on a discussion paper about the future of the elibrary at UBC. Having recently returned from a trip to Paris I have just dived back into the fray and set to work. It’s very interesting (and a little odd)to write a paper as a group. As a student I wrote on my papers independently and as a present writer I will at times work with an editor to develop a piece. I’ve already started working through what the other members of the group have been working on and I’m pulling together material for the section I am assigned to. One thing that hasn’t been tackled Read the rest of this entry »
Vancouver Photobloggers is a cool newish blog with a flickr group post feed for those that obsess with the camera. There are currently 15 members with 62 photo posts and growing. “A collective of Vancouver photographers seeking out others to collaborate with on upcoming shows, share techniques and just see what happens…” (quoted from Vancouver Photobloggers ‘about’ page). The latest offerings of photos are outdoor photographs with warm earthy tones.
This appeals to me as I’m in a mode to stop taking courses and experiment not only on my own but to learn Read the rest of this entry »
Women’s Alternative & Informal Learning Pathways to Jobs in the IT Sector - It’s a Wrap!

For the past few years UBC grad student Kaela Jubas and her Vancouver colleague Dr.Shauna Butterwick have been involved in a research project to find out about the alternative pathways’s that women use in the IT sector as part of their career development. This sector is part of the Work and Lifelong Learning (WALL) research network which is funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Last year I recieved an invite from the Digital Eve mailing list to be a participant in this study. As someone who is interested in IT and in education I volunteered Read the rest of this entry »
